Post-A level of Japanese language equivalent to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) A2 or The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N4. Enrolment of this module is subject to a placement test, unless students have passed EAST1220 (Basic Japanese Language 2).

This module is approved as a discovery module
This module is for those who have taken Japanese A-level or equivalent. It aims to provide a solid foundation in Japanese grammar and further development of both spoken and written skills. Upper-elementary to intermediate grammar and vocabulary will be introduced and reinforced through conversation, extensive reading and translation practice. Please note this is an optional module and runs subject to enrolments. If a low number of students choose this module, then the module may not run and you may be asked to choose another module.
To continue Japanese language training, building on beginners’ level modules (or equivalent) to provide a solid grounding in Japanese grammar and further development of speaking and writing skills, alongside cultural awareness. The module aims to develop skills: in reading and writing kanji and gain proficiency in kana; in conversational Japanese using appropriate vocabulary and grammatical structures; and in reading and writing short texts with accuracy.
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Demonstrate reading and writing essential kanji characters as well as using hiragana and katakana appropriately.
2. Engage in oral communication and interaction with ease within structured, predictable situations or selected topics, showcasing grammatical, phonological, and lexical clarity, while exhibiting awareness of situation-bound language constraints. Exhibit awareness of situation-bound language constraints, including the use of honorific language.
3. Respond to texts on a variety of non-specialist subjects in Japanese.
4. Generate structured pieces of writing on selected topics, demonstrating grammatical accuracy and a broad vocabulary in Japanese.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Employ oral presentation skills including interactions with audience.
6. Practice cultural awareness for the different levels of politeness in written and spoken languages.

- an in-class mock test with the same format as the written exam
